Strategic guidance on resource-efficient design interventions

WRAP, the government-funded Waste and Resources Action Programme, is steadily extending its remit to promote resource efficiency in a growing number of United Kingdom supply chains. BFF was commissioned in partnership with construction specialists Davis Langdon to prepare a 'thinkpiece' on how the programme could act most effectively to increase the adoption of resource efficient specification and design.

We prepared briefing papers for five sectors – grocery products; home improvement products; electrical and electronic products; construction product design; and architectural and civil engineering design. The range of recommendations – which included promoting standardisation, crowd-sourcing of knowledge, targeting critical supply chain interfaces and new consumer-facing campaigns – were shared across WRAP programmes to help to inform its next business plan.

WRAP's special advisor, Mark Barthel, commented: "This is a massive subject area and the team managed to quickly distil some potent and innovative ideas, many of which have shaped our thinking on the options we have for the future, as we seek to more directly influence how resource efficiency and scarcity are considered as part of the specification and design of products and the built environment."
