BELECTRIC UK tenders successfully for National Grid EFR (Enhanced Frequency Response) project
BELECTRIC UK has emerged among the winners of the National Grid Enhanced Frequency Response (EFR) tendering exercise held in July 2016.
National Grid Electricity Transmission defines EFR as a service that achieves 100% active power output within 1 second of registering a frequency deviation — compared to existing Primary and High frequency response services, with timescales of 10 seconds, and Secondary, with a timescale of 30 seconds. EFR is a new service being developed to improve pre-fault system frequency management, i.e. to maintain the system frequency closer to 50 Hz under normal operation.
National Grid has procured 200 MW of enhanced frequency response, of which BELECTRIC UK will be responsible for providing 10 MW.
The enhanced ability to control variations in frequency almost immediately will reduce costs by approximately £200 million pounds and make services more efficient, bringing down costs for the end consumer.
Cordi O’Hara, Director of National Grid, said: “We are constantly looking to the future to understand how we can make the most of the energy available to us. This project is at the very core of our Power Responsive work, to balance the Grid by the most efficient means possible, saving money and energy.
“These awards show that we can work with industry to bring forward new technology and I believe storage has much to contribute to the flexible energy system of tomorrow. This is the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the industry.”
