According to all the energy auditors I've met, nearly all people and businesses can save between 5 and 10% of their energy consumption (and costs) purely through behavioural changes such as switching electrical equipment off at the mains rather than leaving it on standby, turning off lights when they're not being used and optimising their central heating and hot water settings. If you want to make a difference at home or work, this is a great place to start - just be conscious of your energy use. Once you've proved the energy and financial savings, reinvest those savings in energy efficiency products and take the next step to reducing your carbon footprint. An energy monitor would be a good place to start as it will help you identify where you're using energy - it's not always obvious.
