Make use of seasonal free foods

15 August 2008

August through to October is the traditional harvest time in the UK, and it's a time of year when many wild plants bear their fruit too.

Two great examples of abundant, tasty and free fruit that can be harvested at this time of year are elderberries and blackberries.

Elderberries are often known as the Englishman's grape and analysis shows that they contain many of the same nutritional elements, with elderberries being even richer than grapes particularly in Vitamins A and C.

Blackberries are a childhood favourite of many and are found in copious quantities all over the UK. There seems to be a particularly good crop this year, so my suggestion is to get out this weekend and pick as many blackberries and elderberries as you can and make yourself some nice crumble or pie - the excess fruit can always be frozen for later in the year.

I've always seen blackberries as the only redeeming factor of brambles, and I make it my business to get as much revenge as I can by gorging on the ripe fruit in return for all the cuts and rips I suffer through the rest of the year. A nice apple, blackberry and elderberry crumble would be just right for pudding...

Just type 'elderberry recipes' or 'blackberry recipes' into your favourite search engine for some tasty ideas for cheap (and low carbon) puddings. This food is growing wild, so as long as you don't drive a 4X4 or sportscar to go and pick them, using this food resource should save carbon emissions and money too.

I just wanted to add a quick follow up to my post last week about getting out and about and making use of seasonal food.

My better half and I went for a nice walk on Sunday and went picking elderberries, blackberries and rosehips. After about an hour and a half of fresh air and exercise, we'd collected about a kilo and a half of blackberries and a couple of kilos of ripe elderberries.

We were also looking for rosehips because they can be dried out and used as healthy treats for our chinchillas. The ones we found weren't very ripe, so we'll go out again to get some of those.

We combined the blackberries with some apples from the tree in our garden which are just ripening now and made an industrial-sized crumble.

The elderberries we made into elderberry cordial: apparently a renowned traditional prophylactic for winter colds. Anyway, from about 1kg of eldberries, we made over 7 litres of cordial which should keep well into the winter in our reused wine and soft drink bottles.

All in all, a nice way to go and save money and stock up on free, healthy food. We didn't drive anywhere, there was no packaging and I'm pretty sure there were no pesticides, fertilisers or farm machinery used in growing it all.

I guess my only 'low carbon concern' was with the elderberries. It took a fair bit of boiling to extract the juice and dissolve all the sugar. I'm sure that energy used was more than if it had all been done in a factory with the latest energy efficient heating technology, but as for whether the energy used overall (without transport, factory lighting, packaging etc) was less or more, I don't know.

WATER
The availability of fresh water will decline, according to the UN, who project that by 2025 1.8bn people will be affected by water scarcity. Sanitation is also a major issue, as contaminated water is the greatest single cause of human disease and death. The state of the world's fisheries is also touched on by the report which says many fish stocks are overexploited, while the demand for fish is expected to rise alongside growing populations.
