Writing on the comment is free weblog on the Guardian, Jeffrey Sachs has argued that solar power is the most promising long-term technology for renewable energy.He notes that the total solar radiation hitting the planet is equal to around 1,000 times of the whole world's commercial energy use."This means that even a small part of the earth's land surface - notably in desert regions, which receive massive solar radiation - can supply large amounts of the electricity for much of the rest of the world," he said.He added that solar panels situated in the Mojave desert could supply half of the energy needs in the US, while plants elsewhere could provide power to Europe and Africa.The Energy Saving Trust notes that solar photovoltaic panels only require daylight to generate electricity, rather than direct sunlight and can generate some power even when it is cloudy.
