The amount of carbon related to manufacturing and delivering some of Tesco's products will be available for scrutiny from May. It has announced a small number of its own brands - including orange juice, potatoes, energy-efficient light bulbs and washing detergent will be labelled with the grammes of carbon released into the atmosphere. Eventually the retailer expects to label up to 70,000 products with the carbon information and has been working with the Carbon Trust to produce accurate calculations. Chief executive Sir Terry Leahy told the Guardian: "It has not been simple, but we are there." He also indicated his commitment to "a revolution in green consumption" where eco concerns were mainstream. The Guardian noted Tesco's carbon footprint is four million tonnes a year and the retailer posted record profits last year, despite a slowing economy. In related news, Walkers crisps is currently operating a year-long pilot scheme to label its packaging with the carbon footprint associated with the manufacture and distribution of its products.
