Private finance initiative (PFI ) credits have been awarded to four projects in England in order to enhance waste management at a local level, offering major carbon benefits, it has been reported.The Department for Environment and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced that Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Partnership has received £77.4 million, Bradford Metropolitan District Council has received £62.1 million, Suffolk County Council £102 million and Leeds City Council £68.6 million.Funds will be used to reduce the overall creation of waste and together with energy efficiency and the increased use of low carbon materials help in the fight against climate change.Joan Ruddock, environment minister, said: "PFI agreements like these provide an incentive for local authorities and industry to work together to achieve our goals of reducing the environmental impact of waste, and making better use and reuse of the waste we create."She added that all four projects are pursuing solutions that will achieve major carbon benefits.The Energy Saving Trust reports that if all homes with unfilled cavity walls were filled, the resulting energy saved could heat 1.4 million homes a year.
