FoE: Food inflation down to mass farming techniques The fluctuating price of food is down to environmentally harmful mass farming techniques, claims one green organisation.

Friends of the Earth (FoE) commented on recent figures from the British Retail Consortium, showing that food inflation was seven percent down on this time last year.

Campaigner Nicholas Beuret of FoE attributed the unstable price of food to industrial farming and the current drive to produce biofuel.

Mr Beuret said: "To ensure food security, protect rainforests, save livelihoods and tackle climate change we must make the switch from big business-led factory farming to a planet-friendly system based on meeting local food needs.

"The government must support British farmers to produce animal feed in the UK - and drop its biofuels targets in favour of supporting greener travel alternatives to driving."

Factory-farming techniques could support an increase in demand globally for certain types of food that will require packaging that is potentially more damaging to the environment.

A study released last month by Freedonia forecast that world demand for food containers will rise by 3.8 percent per year because of changes in lifestyle across the world, with people eating more processed fast-foods. The developing economies of Asia, Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe are expecting to "outpace" the global average in demand.
