Cities should devise ways to reduce emissions from transport, the government said yesterday (March 2nd).The transport minister Sadiq Khan launched the Urban Challenge Fund which will support local authority ventures to improve air quality to encourage walking and cut the environmental impact of cars and public transport.All applicants for the grants will have to demonstrate that their plans can meet public health and environmental agendas, unlike the scheme's forerunner the Congestion Transport Innovation Fund which focused primarily on traffic measures.However, the Campaign for Better Transport called for more action: "Whether the fund becomes a reality after the election will be the key test. Without real new money to improve urban transport, councils won't be able to make any of this a reality. Cities will continue to be oppressed by traffic congestion and pollution."Some cities have already taken strides in cutting emissions.
