WWF UK: "Radical shift" needed to reduce UK's carbon emissions

31 March 2008

WWF UK: A new report from WWF UK has claimed that a "radical shift" in government policy is needed in order for Britain to meet its carbon emissions reduction targets.

The group claimed that in addition to increasing the uptake of energy efficient home improvements such as insulation installation and new boilers, there should be a review of the low carbon obligations of energy suppliers - which could include support for the rollout of solid wall insulation and more investment into low carbon technology.

In addition, WWF UK's How Low? report claimed that the UK might be able to manage to reduce domestic carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent by 2050 if more is done to improve the energy efficiency of household appliances.

"Our homes are the low hanging fruit in terms of achieving the deep cuts we need in carbon emissions but the government is currently investing inadequate resources in inappropriate places," said Simon McWhirter, campaign manager for WWF UK's One Planet Future scheme.

The group also stated that more carbon-conscious behaviour needs to be encouraged in the home in order to cut carbon emissions.

One Planet Future campaigns for greater awareness about household carbon emissions in the UK.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18529099-ADNFCR
