Environment secretary Hilary Benn has claimed the UK is "on target" to achieve the emissions reduction level set out in the Kyoto Protocol.The Guardian reported today that Mr Benn stated the UK is "making progress in cutting emissions" but that the nation still has "much to do" to prevent further climate change.According to provisional statistics representing total greenhouse gas emissions in the UK last year, it is thought that 2007 saw a two per cent decrease in carbon dioxide emissions compared with 2006.In total, it is estimated that net carbon emissions last year measured around 543.7 million tonnes.Mr Benn claimed the figures show that although the UK is making steps forward in reducing emissions, the economy will require "a major change" to meet the more "ambitious" emissions reduction targets of the climate change bill.Meanwhile, the Independent reported today that the bottled water industry produces around 200,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
