School 'to generate renewable electricity'

26 March 2008

School 'to generate renewable electricity' A school in South Lanarkshire is set to be the first in the region to generate electricity from on-site wind turbines.

Blacklaw Primary School - which is set to reopen in summer 2008 following refurbishment and modernisation - will be the home of two 15-metre tall wind turbines following council approval of the scheme.

It is thought that if the pilot programme at the school is successful, it could be rolled out to other schools in the region.

"It is believed that the education benefits from having the wind turbines at the school will be immense," a South Lanarkshire council spokeswoman told the East Kilbride News.

"Being able to experience renewable energy first hand will really bring the subject to life," she added.

In other windfarm news, villagers in Norfolk are currently upset about an application for a six turbine windfarm near Huntingdon, which they claim could cause noise and a strobing effect, the Hunts Post has claimed.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18523981-ADNFCR

Discuss   UK AWARE sponsors do not necessarily need to be from a 'green' industry. They do, however, need to have a genuine concern for environmental matters and conduct business in an appropriate manner.
