London's black cabs have been given an environmentally-friendly redesign by a specialist green taxi supplier.Eco City Vehicles Plc launched its Mercedes Electric eVito Taxi today (February 9th). According to the company, the updated cab uses Lithium-ion batteries which can run for 120 miles on a single charge, covering the same distance as a traditional black cab while producing zero emissions.Co-developed by a consortium of engineering companies including Mercedes Benz UK, Penso and Zytec Automotive, it is hoped that the results from the trial will mean other commercial vehicles can be similarly adapted. The new electric vehicles will be tested on the roads later this year, though their specification already meets the mayor of London's proposed green air standards that are meant to be implemented in time for the Olympics. Statistics from the environmental audit committee last week revealed that transport is the only sector in which emissions have increased on 1990 levels.http://tinyurl.com/yd6s6v4
