Personal carbon accounts 'may benefit the elderly'

07 March 2008

Personal carbon accounts 'may benefit the elderly' A charity has claimed that UK pensioners may benefit from a well-designed personal carbon account scheme.

Help the Aged suggested that a number of policies designed with tackling climate change in mind may bring benefits to the elderly.

In particular, the charity claimed many pensioners living "below the breadline" use a minimum amount of carbon, as the demographic tends to purchase few electronic goods and do not usually take foreign holidays.

Help the Aged claimed that these people may benefit from a carbon account scheme that would enable them to sell their carbon surpluses to business travellers.

Anna Pearson, policy manager for the organisation, said an "imaginative approach" is needed to deal with the issues of climate change, as well as the increased cost of providing long-term care and pensions.

"The very policies created to tackle climate change may also help to ensure our communities serve older people better," she suggested.

Help the Aged campaigns for changes in policy to reflect the needs of older people in the UK and abroad.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18500779-ADNFCR
