South Yorkshire school to take place in low carbon programme
29 February 2008
Students at a school in Rotherham will have the opportunity to develop a carbon reduction plan for the building during a visit from a BP science team next week.
The student workshop, which will be held next Wednesday, will enable students to learn about how their school can work on cutting its carbon footprint, the Sheffield Star reported.
Aimed at pupils aged 14 to 16, the programme is part of a three-year BP initiative to encourage the study of science-related subjects in UK schools.
"Enthusing our young people to learn science is our biggest challenge in developing the next generation of great British scientists," said Sir David King, the government's chief scientific adviser, at the launch of the scheme.
"This generation will also be on the front line of further developing the low carbon technologies needed to tackle climate change," he added.
The programme is expected to reach more around 60,000 students in 400 schools each year.
Other low-carbon initiatives undertaken by BP include the targetneutral emissions offset programme, as well as a personal carbon footprint assessment tool which can be accessed through the firm's website.
