Community uses solar power to cut carbon footprint

26 February 2008

Community uses solar power to cut carbon footprint A community centre in Mount, near Bodmin, has installed a solar-powered heating system, it has emerged.

The BBC reported that a total of 26 solar panels have been installed on the roof of Warleggan Jubilee Hall.

Electric equipment and central heating at the hall will be powered by solar energy, which the village hopes will help to cut its carbon emissions by 54 tonnes over the next 30 years.

Some £25,000 to fund the scheme was provided through grants from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, as well as EDF Energy's Green Fund.

Warleggan Jubilee Hall was constructed in 1935 and has a main hall seated capacity of 100 people.

According to Plug Into The Sun, the hall is the first community project in Britain to benefit from funding from the second phase of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.

Other community buildings currently benefiting from solar power include the Camborne-based offices of Kerrier District Council and the YMCA building in Penzance.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18482736-ADNFCR
