The city of London is aiming to cut carbon emissions by exploring new technologies for getting rid of waste, it has emerged.The Greater London Authority's Greenhouse Gas Balances of Waste Management Scenarios report states that by taking advantage of advanced gasification and anaerobic digestion technologies, the city may be able to reduce its carbon footprint.Currently, incinerators process around 22 per cent of the capital's waste, although the report asserts that up to 410 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions could be saved per tonne of waste treated by using newer technologies, which can also extract energy and heat from rubbish.London is also working to reduce its carbon emissions in a number of other ways. Mayor Ken Livingstone announced today that cars with the highest recorded levels of greenhouse gas emissions will pay a daily congestion charge of £25 to travel in central London.In addition, this week the mayor also announced the launch of Green Screen London, which will improve the energy efficiency of filming in London and cut down on carbon emissions.
