E-Day to raise low-carbon awareness

11 February 2008

E-Day to raise low-carbon awareness An energy-saving event scheduled to take place at the end of the month aims to increase low-carbon awareness and improve energy efficiency.

Energy Saving Day, or E-Day, will take place in the 24-hour period from 18:00 GMT on February 27th.

Following a launch event to be held at St Paul's Cathedral - which will feature remarks from the Bishop of London, a candlelit vigil held for the planet, games and a pedal-powered cinema - UK residents will be encouraged to participate in the Leave It Off programme by switching off non-essential electrical items.

National Grid estimates that UK electricity consumption could be cut by one to three per cent by leaving off items such as printers, mobile phone chargers and television sets on standby, event organisers have reported.

Among the principles guiding the E-Day campaign include providing facts and support for people looking to "mitigate their production of carbon emissions", as well as to increase awareness of energy conservation measures that can be adopted by citizens.

The BBC reports that the event is supported by charity coalition Stop Climate Chaos, which includes members such as Greenpeace and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18463193-ADNFCR

URBAN GROWTH
By the end of 2007 it is estimated that more people will live in cities than rural areas for the first time in history. The satellite image of the US city of Las Vegas (left) shows how rapidly metropolitan areas can grow. The city was home to 557,000 people in 1985, by 2004 this had risen to nearly 1.7 million. This rapid growth can put pressure on water resources and infrastructure.
