EU states disagree on emissions commitments

16 January 2008

EU states disagree on emissions commitments European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso has hit back at critics of plans for EU countries to cut carbon emissions, saying that there will be no compromise.

A number of European states have complained about the carbon reduction targets, which are due to be made public next week, claiming that they will damage their economies.

According to the Financial Times, the French and German governments are currently talking about building a common front against the proposals, after French president Nicolas Sarkozy claimed that the proposals were "neither efficient, fair nor economically sustainable".

However, Mr Barroso advised the EU to stand firm in its position on the matter, stating to the European Parliament that it is time to "put our money where our mouth is".

"Both our international credibility and credibility before European Union citizens depend on fulfilment of the targets," he added. "Do not expect us to compromise on European interests."

The targets reportedly aim to cut carbon dioxide levels by 20 per cent and raise the proportion of renewable energy to 20 per cent by 2020.
