Government 'remains committed' to renewable energy

11 January 2008

Government 'remains committed' to renewable energy Business and Enterprise secretary John Hutton has rubbished claims that yesterday's (January 10th) government approval of plans for building a new generation of nuclear power stations represents an abandonment of any commitment to renewable energy.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's 'The World At One' programme, he claimed that the government was still totally behind plans to meet European Union targets for renewable energy production.

And he argued that the latest decision relating to nuclear power would contribute towards guaranteeing the UK's energy security at a time when fossil fuel prices continued to rise.

"What is happening to the price of fossil fuels, oil and gas?" Mr Hutton asked. "They're going up and they're going to continue to go up because we've got a shortage of supply and growing demand, and on top of that we've got an atmosphere where energy's becoming highly politicised."

He told the broadcaster that claims that yesterday's announcement would see an end to the promotion of renewable energy were "simply not borne out by the facts, and I'd ask people to look at what we're actually doing."

As part of its nuclear energy plans, the government has committed not to provide public subsidies for any of the new projects apart from in event of an emergency.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18423614-ADNFCR
