IT growth hits government carbon-neutrality targets

10 January 2008

IT growth hits government carbon-neutrality targets Government departments are unlikely to meet their targets for carbon neutrality by 2012 due an increased use of IT equipment, a new report has claimed.

According to figures published by the National Audit Office, less than a quarter of departments moved towards the carbon reduction target, Public Servant Daily reported.

Despite the departments managing to reduce their gas usage between 2000 and 2006, the report highlighted the impact growing use of IT-related equipment had on electricity use.

"Only five out of 21 government departments have met or are making progress against their carbon reduction target," report authors Eric Lewis and Gill Proaktor told the website.

"However, four of these five have done so only because of significant reductions in their estate area. The remaining 16 departments, including all the largest, have recorded increases in emissions."

According to the report, the Food Standards Agency was the only government department meeting both its carbon reduction and energy efficiency targets.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18422219-ADNFCR
