£55m of renewable energy grants left unclaimed

04 January 2008

£55m of renewable energy grants left unclaimed As much as £55 million of grants are still available for both homeowners and businesses looking to introduce small scale renewable energy projects, the government has revealed.

While £25 million has been claimed under the Low Carbon Buildings programme since April 2006, energy minister Malcolm Wicks indicated that £11 million remained for individuals and a further £44 million was still available to businesses.

As a result he called on homeowners, businesses and other organisations to increase their take-up of the grants in 2008 to develop their own renewable energy projects.

"It's vital that recent efforts by world governments to reach a deal on cutting global carbon emissions are matched by action by each and every one of us," Mr Wicks said.

"There are still grants available to householders who want to follow in the footsteps of the thousands across the UK who have been helped by the government to fit microgeneration technology at their homes."

According to the Guardian, the initiatives have been hampered by a government reluctance to give out funds without proof of planning permission, as well as reduction in the amount permitted per household from £15,000 to £2,500.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18414270-ADNFCR
