All new schools are to be carbon neutral by 2016, under new proposals announced by the government today (December 17th).Schools will receive funding to install both solar panels and wind turbines, with projects focusing on making them more energy efficient and increasing their use of renewable energy sources.Unveiling the plans, children's secretary Ed Balls detailed roughly 200 projects that will cost as much as £110 million over the next three years, the Guardian reported."We are taking action now to reduce carbon emissions in new school buildings, while we work towards the zero carbon goal," Mr Balls said."This provides an additional £500,000 for the average secondary school, to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy measures on school sites."Additional measures proposed by the minister included the use of low-energy light-bulbs and computers, along with the production of energy by using biomass-fuelled boilers.
