Solar car to take part in endurance race A solar powered car 50 times more energy efficient than a petrol vehicle will be competing in an endurance race to take the title of world's greenest car.

Cambridge University Eco Racing (CUER) will be competing at the World Solar Challenge later this year with its solar car codenamed 'Bethany'.

The challenge, which sees teams compete for a £1 million prize in a 300 kilometre race, will take place in Australia in October.

Bethany can achieve cruising speeds of 60 miles per hour using the same amount of power used to operate a hair drier.

As well as its six metres squared of solar cells, the car boasts optimum aerodynamics, lowered rolling resistance, lightweight construction and electrical efficiency which combine to create a vehicle 50 times more efficient than a petrol car.

CUER's Team Manager, Anthony Law, commented: "At a time when the automotive industry is being forced to look at a low carbon future, our vehicle demonstrates the enormous potential of electric vehicle technologies.

"Transportation currently accounts for around 35 per cent of the UK's energy use so this is obviously an area in which we can have a big impact on climate change."

According to the Committee on Climate Change it will be essential to make the transition to cleaner vehicles if the UK is to meet its carbon emission reduction targets.
