Germany outlines extensive new carbon-cutting measures

05 December 2007

Germany outlines extensive new carbon-cutting measures The German government has outlined a package of measures aimed at reducing the country's carbon emissions by 40 per cent before 2020.

Included in the legislative package approved by the country's cabinet today (December 5th) are several measures including a carbon tax for trucks, new rules for traffic and tougher regulation of new buildings, Reuters reported.

At the same time the plan has set a target of producing half of Germany's electricity being from renewable energy sources or super-efficient plants by 2020.

"The government is making a big step forward to achieve its climate protection goals," government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm told the International Herald Tribune.

Environment minister, Sigmar Gabriel, added: "No other country in the world can go to Bali with such a concrete and ambitious program."

Greenpeace criticised the government's plans, claiming that the envisaged construction of 24 new power plants would make it impossible for the carbon reduction targets to be reached.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18382864-ADNFCR
