India aims for role as 'wind super-power'

30 November 2007

India aims for role as 'wind super-power' India is one of the world's biggest users of wind power and the sector's growth is set to continue in the next few years, experts have claimed.

The country is the world's fourth largest wind-power market, Reuters reports, and a combination of tax breaks in the 1990s for people looking to build turbines and its extensive coastline have helped use of the renewable energy source to grow.

Experts also highlighted a series of progressive policies adopted by the Indian government in recent years that have made wind power an increasingly attractive option as oil prices rise.

"Wind power is growing tremendously. If you want a wind plant you'll have to book a year in advance," Chandra Bhushan, associate director at the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment, told the website.

"There's been years of progressive policies and recognition for a long time that India will face a shortage of fossil fuels," he added.

According to the International Energy Agency, India will become the world's third-largest carbon emitter by 2015.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18376887-ADNFCR
