Climate change takes toll on British wildlife

Climate change has taken a toll on British wildlife this year, with animal and plant species suffering.

A new report from the National Trust has revealed that two poor summers and an unexpectedly frosty spring has posed problems for insects and birds.

Bird breeding was hit by a lack of food from a reduction in the number of insects and the failure of nests in May caused by severe rail.

Matthew Oates, nature conservation advisor at the National Trust, explained: "Many iconic species closely associated with the four seasons are having to cope with higher incidents of poor weather as our climate becomes more unpredictable."

"Climate change is not some future prediction of what might happen, it's happening now and having a serious impact on our countryside every year," he added.

The seasonal survey also found that puffin numbers on the Farne Island have fallen by 35 percent over the past five years.
