China launches renewable energy project

13 November 2007

China has launched a new renewable energy project, pledging to prioritise renewable energy sources and promote international co-operation in the sector.

Speaking at an international forum in Beijing, a Chinese government minister outlined plans to give priority to five renewable energy sources - solar power, biomass fuels, wind power, hydrogen energy and natural gas utilisation.

Cao Jianlin, vice-minister for science and technology, also highlighted the importance of promoting the international exchange of ideas and information, suggesting seminars, forums and joint research centres to help address renewable energy technology.

"Through international cooperation, China will demonstrate to the global community its determination to explore new and renewable energy sources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build an environment-friendly society," he said.

"We will soon extend invitations to experts on new and renewable energy from around to the world in a bid to establish a committee to outline key tasks and suggest areas for cooperation," he added.

International Energy Agency figures recently indicated that carbon dioxide emissions from China are set to overtake those from the US by 2009.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18353613-ADNFCR
