Welsh ''green primary school''

Construction began this week on a new eco-friendly ''green'' primary school in Angelsey, which will produce its own electricity and sell any extra to the national grid when it opens in 2008.

The island''s green school will be built in Llangefni, and council leaders have described the project, expected to cost £3.7 million as a "landmark project".

The new school sports a design which includes solar photovoltaic roofing tiles, a wind turbine and a natural habitat for plants and insects on the roof. It will also be built using a sustainable timber structure, making it more energy efficient.

Councillor Gareth Winston Roberts said: "In an age where tackling climate change where tackling climate change is high on everyone''s agenda, this new school will be state of the art in terms of sustainability and environmental design.

"This project also demonstrates our strong commitment to education provision on the island. I''m sure that the pupils and staff will now, like me, be excited to see the work getting under way."

The current primary school is located on a busy industrial estate in the centre of the town. The new project will, however, be located on the outskirts of the town, further reducing the number of cars congesting the city and improving road safety.
