Green Party: Govt transport policy at odds with emissions targets

01 November 2007

The Green Party has argued that the government''s policy of large-scale road building and extended aviation capacity is at odds with the UK''s emission reduction targets.

Responding to the Department for Transport''s (DfT) report, ''Towards a Sustainable Transport System'', Green Party principal speaker Caroline Lucas said: "[Transport secretary Ruth] Kelly makes no bones about the DfT''s number one goal - maximising economic competitiveness, whilst curbing our emissions comes a poor second."

She pointed out that the government is planning to spend £1.3 billion a year on increasing road capacity.

"Irresponsible and short sighted, pouring yet more money into old- fashioned and carbon intensive modes of transport will guarantee our emissions continue to rise," Ms Lucas continued.

She called for radical reform of our transport and planning infrastructure in order to tackle rising carbon emissions. The amount of transport required could be reduced by making sure people have access to work, shopping and leisure facilities nearer their homes.

The Green Party was originally founded as PEOPLE in Coventry in 1973, changing its name in the 1980s.
