Private and public organisations that use more than 50 megalitres of water should be able to choose their water and sewerage provider, according to a review of competition in the water sector.Professor Martin Cave has published preliminary results of his review, which is backed by industry regulator Ofwat. He has claimed that increasing competition would benefit the economy, environment and service to customers."Extending competition will deliver real benefits for customers and the environment through lower prices, more choice, higher service levels and the better use of water. These changes could benefit the economy by around £600 million over the next 30 years," he said. The report suggests first giving the choice of provider to 28,000 private and public sector organisations before extending it to 162,000.It also recommends separating the retail division of water companies from the network business and encouraging new water and wastewater suppliers. When the call for evidence for the review was announced, Water UK, which represents the water business, welcomed the emphasis on innovation to dealing with problems posed by climate changed.http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/water/industry/cavere...
