Savings of £20 billion a year on health spending could be made by EU nations as a related effect of setting higher carbon emissions targets, according to a new report.Raising the current emissions reductions targets from 20 per cent by 2020 to 30 per cent would lead to a decrease in loss of working days and strain on medical systems, the report claims.The Health and Environment Alliance, Climate Action Network Europe and the WWF commissioned the report, which is based on evaluations of loss of life, health working days and medical costs.It concludes that between 6.5 billion (£5.1 billion) and 25 billion in costs would be saved and claims that setting emissions reductions targets at 30 per cent would cut hospital admissions by 30 per cent and save two million working days.At his party conference speech, prime minister Gordon Brown suggested he was open to considering raising the target of emissions cuts from 60 per cent by 2050 to 80 per cent.http://www.env-health.org/IMG/pdf/Co-benefits_to_health_r...
