In order to avoid irreversible climate change, governments of the world must ensure that 50 per cent of all energy is generated from renewable sources, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).Following the G8 meeting at Gleneagles, in which a call for a clean renewable future was called for, the IEA has published its guide for effective policy making and called on governments to do more.Nobuo Tanaka, IEA executive director said: "Setting a carbon price is not enough. To foster a smooth and efficient transition of renewables towards mass market integration, renewable energy policies should be designed around a set of fundamental principles, inserted into predictable, transparent and stable policy frameworks and implemented in an integrated approach."The guide urges countries to remove non-economic barriers such as administrative hurdles, obstacles to grid access and social acceptance issues, in order to facilitate the transition to a low carbon economy.It also urges policy to be designed to create a predictable and transparent support framework and the use of incentives to encourage technological innovation and support technologies.At the Labour party conference Gordon Brown said he would consider calls from campaign groups to raise the 2050 emissions reduction target from 60 per cent to 80 per cent.http://www.iea.org/Textbase/press/pressdetail.asp?PRESS_R...
