Good Energy proves demand for renewables

An electricity provider which has no carbon emissions has attracted a growing number of customers, posted a profit, and generated sufficient revenue to fund the repowering of a wind farm.

Good Energy, the only electricity provider which supplies energy from 100 per cent renewable generators, has shown that there is demand for renewable energy, said chief executive and founder Juliet Davenport.

Electricity sales for the Chippenham- based company were up 12 per cent in the first half of 2008 compared to the same period a year ago. The company also experienced a similar sized growth in customer numbers, which rose to 60,791.

Turnover was up by 18 per cent to £7.5 million, with some of the additional revenue being reinvested to maintain growth.

The company is set to repower its 4MW wind farm at Delabole in Cornwall to triple its output.

Ms Davenport said: "All of our customers know that buying from Good Energy means supporting renewable energy generation across the UK, from our own assets and others.

"These results demonstrate the strength of public demand for environmentally sound, renewable energy products."

The company has announced plans to launch a gas product next month.

According to the electricityinfo website, Good Energy uses the most renewables of any UK provider and emits the least carbon. The UK average for renewable energy is 4.7 per cent and carbon emissions of 0.461 kilograms per kWh.
