The "Formula Zero" event is designed to highlight the potential for fuel cell powered cars, and six teams in total took place in the event. Go-karts used in the event made zero emissions from their exhausts due to a process which electrochemically combines hydrogen with atmospheric oxygen. The race saw two separate events, a sprint round and an endurance event in which karts completed six laps of a 533 metre track. A Spanish team, EuplatecH2 won the sprint, completing a lap in just over 36 seconds at an average speed of 53 kilometers per hour. According to New Scientist, all of the teams did have problems on the track, with two being unable to take part in the endurance rally due to complications before the race, while the remaining cars all made unscheduled stops on the course. It is hoped that the event will raise the profile of fuel-cell powered cars. The UK transport industry currently produces the second largest amount of CO2 in the country, estimated at 120 million tonnes in 2006.
