Curbs on carbon dioxide emissions imposed on heavy industry could be eased by the European Union, in a move that has alarmed environmentalists.Documents Reuters agency claims to have seen show members of the European Parliament's industry committee are considering an amendment that would make it more difficult to introduce further carbon emissions limits.The consequence would be that it would reduce the likelihood that the EU would tighten its reduction goals."This would make it much harder to move to 30 percent cuts automatically, as the EU would have to go through the whole co-decision procedure, and it could even prevent it altogether," WWF campaigner Kirsty Clough told the agency on Thursday.The amendments considered by the committee would require a full impact assessment before cutting curbs by more than 20 per cent.Also under consideration are plans to reform the Emission Trading System to reduce its impact on energy-intensive industries to keep them competitive globally.The government is committed to reducing UK emissions by 60 per cent by 2050, although a more ambitious target of 80 per cent has been set forward by the Committee on Climate Change.
