Remote islands get funds to cut carbon emissions

Remote islands get funds to cut carbon emissions A remote Scottish community has received £62,000 to increase its energy efficiency and cut its carbon emissions.

Barra and Vatersay, the southernmost inhabited islands in the Outer Hebrides, received the funds from the Climate Change Fund during a visit from Scottish environment minister Richard Lochead.

The Climate Change Fund has £18.8 million which can be used by public bodies for emission cutting measures as part of the Scottish government's attempt to meet its target of cutting emissions by 80 per cent by 2050. Westminster has only set a 60 per cent emissions target emission.

Mr Lochead said: "There are many things we can do as individuals to reduce our carbon emissions, but by acting and working together as communities we can do much more. That's why supporting communities such as Barra and Vatersay through the Climate Challenge Fund is so important."

Plans to develop a 900kW community-owned turbine will receive some of the funding.

The islands are also to use the money to promote farming on the islands so the communities do not have to have as much of their food transported over from Oban.

Discuss   UK AWARE sponsors do not necessarily need to be from a 'green' industry. They do, however, need to have a genuine concern for environmental matters and conduct business in an appropriate manner.
