Fourth largest wind farm plans get go ahead

12 August 2008

Fourth largest wind farm plans get go ahead The UK's fourth largest wind farm will be built off the coast of Norfolk, following the granting of permission by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).

BERR awarded the Scira consortium permission to install up to 108 wind turbines at Sheringham Shoals, which it is claimed will provide sufficient energy for about 178,000 homes.

John Hutton, speaking on the same day as the Norfolk and onshore wind farm at Middlemoor received their approval, said the decision showed the UK was committed to developing renewable energy.

He said: "This new wind farm demonstrates our commitment to dramatically increase the amount of energy we generate from renewable sources, helping to cut the UK's carbon emissions and secure our energy supplies."

Mr Hutton added: "Through the planning bill we are also looking to speed up the planning process for developers and improve consultations to make sure wind farms are built in the right places."

The Sheringham Shoal farm is the first of the Crown Estate's round two projects in the Greater Wash area to receive consent.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18728762-ADNFCR
