Low carbon appliances could save £700m

Switching to low carbon, energy efficient appliances could save people in the UK some £700 million a year, it has been claimed.

UK consumers have been advised to shop around for the most energy efficient appliances by looking for the Energy Saving Recommended logo by the Energy Saving Trust (EST).

The organisation has stated that in doing so, considerable savings could be made to domestic energy bills.

Caroline Rams, public relations assistant for the EST, explained that replacing old energy inefficient fridge-freezers with Energy Saving Recommended versions could save £34 a year.

"If we all made the change to more efficient cold appliances (fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers) this week, together we'd save around £700 million every year," she said.

According to the EST, an energy saving washing machine uses two-thirds less electricity and less water.
