People in the UK may be more likely to address their environmental concerns if a plastic bag ban was imposed. This is according to Wastewatch, an environmental organisation that aims to change the way people use the world's natural resources.Caroline Laitner, spokesperson for the group, explained that such an initiative would help people to understand the green message about reducing waste and therefore help them to act on it.Ms Laitner emphasised that such a move would need to be communicated to the public effectively and would be an effective symbolic gesture to promote waste reduction."It's a good way of introducing people to the fact that they should try and reduce their waste and use things which have some sort of longevity rather than always using things which are disposable," she remarked.According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, 88 per cent of shoppers put their shopping into free carrier bags, using an average of three to four per trip.
