Church adopts low carbon initiative

A low carbon scheme has been adopted by churchgoers in Somerset, according to reports.

St John's Church in Kenilworth has made energy efficient improvements to the church and encourages its congregation to adopt greener lifestyles, the Coventry Telegraph reports.

Car-sharing schemes have been successful in transporting worshippers to services, while the church itself has managed to cut its energy bills by 25 per cent as a result of the measures it has taken.

Peter Fisher, a retired engineer involved with the parish's efforts, explained that the movement began by encouraging parishioners to turn off their lights when they were not using them.

"We also put some insulation in and installed energy efficient light bulbs, which has reduced the electricity bill a lot," he said.

Eco-Congregations have been formed throughout the country, with many being rewarded for their efforts. Award winners include Stratford's Methodist Church and St John's in Edinburgh.
