Low carbon cars see steady sales compared to gas guzzlers
17 July 2008
Low carbon vehicle sales have remained steady in recent months despite a market downturn.
This is according to Manheim's Monthly Analysis report, which indicates that there has been a downturn in gas guzzling car sales, while those of eco cars remain steady.
The Supermini sector saw consecutive increases in May and June, representing a 3.1 per cent increase over the year, which, according to the experts at Manheim, reflect a healthy market.
Sales of 4x4s, including both soft roader and larger off-road vehicles, which notoriously consume more fuel and have a bigger impact on the environment, have dipped, according to the research.
Mike Pilkington, managing director of Manheim auctions and remarketing, said: "The tougher market for wholesale used cars first reported in May looks set to continue for some time yet but we are encouraged by the fact that the conditions do not seem to be affecting all market segments or all sectors."
Prime minister Gordon Brown, speaking at the G8 summit last week, encouraged people to drive electric and hybrid cars as a means of staving off the costs of fuel and cut carbon emissions.
