Low carbon efforts acknowledged for NI business

One Northern Ireland business has been commended for its efforts to contribute to a low carbon economy, it has been reported.

Bombadier Aerospace in Belfast has received a series of awards this year, including the Belfast Telegraph Award for Excellence in Environmental Achievement and the Business in the Community Recognition Award for Environmental Improvement.

The awards serve to demonstrate the impressive measures the business has taken in order to cut its carbon emissions, which have been reduced by 70 per cent since 2005.

Some 14,000 tonnes of CO2 were saved from entering the atmosphere last year, while total energy consumption has been reduced by 13 per cent.

An energy consumption monitoring system has been installed to help track the areas that use the most power, while a high-efficiency boiler and energy saving lighting have also been installed.

Russell McFadden, general manager in Transformation at the firm, said: "Despite increased activity levels, we continue to take significant steps to make the operation of our organisation more energy-efficient and the management of our waste more environmentally prudent."

Elsewhere in the UK, a new school in Hull has become the first to have two wind turbines powering it.
