Power homes and cars with new low carbon system

11 July 2008

Power homes and cars with new low carbon system A new hydrogen-based system has been developed that could power people's cars and their homes.

ITM Power has this week unveiled its home fuelling station, which uses water and electricity from the home and converts it into hydrogen, which can then be used to fuel cars.

It is thought that enough power can be generated to last for some 25 miles and can be used in the adapted engines of petrol cars.

The fuel is created through the use of an electrolyser. Meanwhile, an internal combustion generator can be used in order to convert the hydrogen so that it can power the household itself.

"Given the pressing need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, especially oil, and to cut CO2 emissions, the future for hydrogen as an alternative means of storing and utilising energy cost-effectively has never been brighter," said Jim Heathcote, chief executive of ITM.

Production recently commenced on the FX Clarity - Honda's much publicised carbon neutral car.
