Eco Centre opened at Cumbrian school
11 July 2008
An environmentally-friendly school facility has recently been opened in Cumbria, it has emerged.
The Mike Wilde Eco Centre at Cockermouth School was developed through a government award scheme, the Carlisle News and Star reports.
Some £1.3 million was granted to the school as part of the Teaching Environments for the Future scheme and the money has been put towards installing wind turbines to generate the facility's energy, as well as water butts to collect rainwater.
Locally sourced recycled materials were used in the construction of the building, such as shredded newspapers and sheep wool for insulation.
Stuart Reeves, headteacher at the school, said: "This is a wonderful building and a great resource for the school, pupils, staff and the community.
"There are a number of collaborative projects with other schools and we hope to see more."
Elsewhere in the UK, a wind turbine was erected last month at Colour House, a children's theatre in London, which will provide enough energy for the entire 70-seat building.
