Peterborough to generate power through cooking

11 July 2008

Peterborough to generate power through cooking Residents in Peterborough will soon be contributing to the generation of clean energy through a new recycling initiative.

Waste cooking oil is to be accumulated in the town at a series of collection points, from which the oil will be recycled, purified and turned into LF100, which can then be used as a green fuel.

Peterborough Today observes that Cambridgeshire city council has joined forces with Donarbon Waste Management, Anglian Water and Living Fuels in order to deliver the scheme.

Living Fuels have initiated several other schemes in the area in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Adrian Venni, managing director of the firm, remarked: "Throwing away used cooking oil clogs up drains and sewers and it contains unused energy, which we cannot afford to waste.

"This initiative solves both problems at a stroke."

Suffolk's waste cooking oil programme was launched in March this year and saw collection tanks distributed to all 18 of the county's recycling centres.

URBAN GROWTH
By the end of 2007 it is estimated that more people will live in cities than rural areas for the first time in history. The satellite image of the US city of Las Vegas (left) shows how rapidly metropolitan areas can grow. The city was home to 557,000 people in 1985, by 2004 this had risen to nearly 1.7 million. This rapid growth can put pressure on water resources and infrastructure.

Discuss   UK AWARE sponsors do not necessarily need to be from a 'green' industry. They do, however, need to have a genuine concern for environmental matters and conduct business in an appropriate manner.
