Music festivals - eco-friendly?

10 July 2008

Music festivals - eco-friendly? Music festivals are considered to be good for the environment despite the large amounts of energy used to power their stages.

This is according to AGreenerFestival.com, which claims that festival-goers use less energy when they are at a festival than they would usually.

Ben Challis, co-founder and director of the not-for-profit company, explained that when people travel to festivals, they park up their car and have no lights, televisions, boilers or radiators to switch on, meaning that they use far less energy.

"Everything food-wise and entertainment-wise is shared - very carbon and energy efficient," Mr Challis said.

In addition, Mr Challis highlighted the fact that more renewable energy is being used to power stages at festivals, such as solar or wind-powered stages seen at the Sunrise and Waveform events.

Glastonbury 2008 saw the launch of the Love the Farm - Leave No Trace campaign, including the distribution of biodegradable tent pegs.

Discuss   UK AWARE sponsors do not necessarily need to be from a 'green' industry. They do, however, need to have a genuine concern for environmental matters and conduct business in an appropriate manner.
