Solar, wind and wave energy in one?
09 July 2008
Plans for an energy company that could provide the UK with wind, solar and marine energy could be formed, according to reports.
Founder of Irish renewables firm Airtricity Eddie O'Connor is attempting to raise funds for the all-encompassing company Mainstream Renewable Power.
According to Reuters, Mr O'Connor hopes to raise 300 million (£238 million) toward the project in addition to the 30 million he has already invested.
Mr O'Connor reportedly claimed that through such initiatives, the UK's renewables target of generating one-third of its electricity from green sources by 2020 is "realistic", despite the fact that only five per cent of power is currently produced in this way.
"UK support is good enough to build offshore wind if you've got the will to do it," he said.
Furthermore, he claimed that a supergrid linking Ireland with the Balric regions, as well as the UK, Germany and Denmark could override any potential reliability problems that wind power could produce.
In related news, study into the potential of an interconnecting wind energy grid between Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland was launched this week.
