Brighton couple to display low carbon home

08 July 2008

Brighton couple to display low carbon home An energy efficient home owned by a couple from Brighton and Hove has been displayed to the public to showcase a number of low carbon improvements to the property.

Jeffery and Brenda Marchant told the Observer this weekend that their gas and electricity bills have been cut by 58 per cent and 48 per cent, respectively, since making a number of improvements to their Edwardian terraced property.

Their eco-friendly changes include solar thermal water heating, as well as replacing regular lightbulbs with low-energy versions.

Now, the home has been used as an example of what people can do with existing housing stock to make their properties more environmentally friendly. It was part of a display of 14 eco open houses that took place across Brighton and Hove - seven of which are older-style properties.

Meanwhile, a writer for the Telegraph has asserted that her family has cut its annual fuel bills by around £1,000 since installing a number of energy efficient home improvements - including cavity wall insulation and double glazing.

URBAN GROWTH
By the end of 2007 it is estimated that more people will live in cities than rural areas for the first time in history. The satellite image of the US city of Las Vegas (left) shows how rapidly metropolitan areas can grow. The city was home to 557,000 people in 1985, by 2004 this had risen to nearly 1.7 million. This rapid growth can put pressure on water resources and infrastructure.
