Low carbon equals low cost for London householder

07 July 2008

Low carbon equals low cost for London householder A West Sussex household has been made virtually zero carbon through a series of measures that allow its resident to live a low-cost lifestyle.

Gay Cossins has taken the environmental initiative by overhauling her four-bedroom house. She installed a log burner in the living room which heats the house and can be used for cooking, thisislondon.co.uk reports.

In addition, she used high levels of insulation in her loft and on her floor, while she grows her own fruit and vegetables which keep her outgoings to a minimum.

Ms Cossins revealed that she pays only £26 a year for gas and an annual £60 for electricity - something that may serve as inspiration to those looking to avoid the soaring cost of energy, which is likely to continue increasing, according to the Daily Mail's Cost of Living Index.

"I've made sure my house has a virtually zero carbon output. I spend virtually nothing at all. It's great."

Campaigning organisation Friends of the Earth recently posited that individual action in tackling climate change can make a huge difference.

URBAN GROWTH
By the end of 2007 it is estimated that more people will live in cities than rural areas for the first time in history. The satellite image of the US city of Las Vegas (left) shows how rapidly metropolitan areas can grow. The city was home to 557,000 people in 1985, by 2004 this had risen to nearly 1.7 million. This rapid growth can put pressure on water resources and infrastructure.

Discuss   UK AWARE sponsors do not necessarily need to be from a 'green' industry. They do, however, need to have a genuine concern for environmental matters and conduct business in an appropriate manner.
